Space heater safety: the rules that matter

How to use a portable space heater safely: where to put it, what to plug it into, and the features to look for.

Portable heaters are safe when used properly, but they need space and attention. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and these common-sense rules.

  • Give it space: keep it well away from beds, curtains, sofas, clothes and paper. Fire services generally recommend at least 1 metre (3 feet).
  • Plug it straight into the wall, not into an extension cord or power bar, unless the manufacturer says otherwise.
  • Put it on a hard, level floor, not on a rug or furniture.
  • Turn it off when you leave the room or go to sleep, unless it's designed for that (oil-filled radiators with a thermostat are the usual choice for bedrooms).
  • Look for certification (cUL, CSA or ETL marks) plus tip-over and overheat protection.
  • Keep working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in your home.

Can I leave a space heater on overnight?

Many fire services advise against leaving fan or ceramic heaters running unattended. If you need overnight heat, a thermostatically controlled oil-filled radiator placed well away from bedding is the more common choice. Always follow the manual.
