Is the air in your house too dry this winter? Signs and fixes
Static shocks, dry skin and a scratchy throat often point to low indoor humidity. How to check it, and fix it without fogging your windows or feeding mold.
When freezing outdoor air is heated to 70 °F indoors, its relative humidity drops sharply. That's why homes feel so dry in January.
Common signs
- Static shocks from door handles and blankets.
- Dry, itchy skin and chapped lips.
- A dry or scratchy throat when you wake up.
- New gaps in hardwood floors or furniture.
Measure before you buy
An inexpensive hygrometer gives you the real number. The EPA calls 30–50% ideal and advises staying under 60%.
Fixes
- A humidifier with a humidity sensor, set to about 35–40%.
- Clean it as the manual says.
- Turn it down if windows start to fog or frost.
